RTM-Requirement Traceability Matrix

Requirement Traceability Matrix

This document is to link requirements throughout the validation process. The purpose of the RTM is to ensure that all requirements defined for a system are tested.
A requirements traceability matrix may be used to check to see if the current project requirements are being met.

The traceability matrix links a business requirement to its corresponding functional requirement right up to the corresponding test cases.
If a test case fails, traceability helps determine the corresponding functionality easily.
It also helps to ensure that all requirements are tested.

Why is RTM important?

  • If requirements change, it is important to identify when and why they changed so the QA team can change their Test Plans accordingly.
  • This is important when new requirements are added later in the project and to make sure the QA is made aware of ensure they are included in the matrix.
  • If a tester who has developed Test Cases without using traceability leaves the organization it would be difficult for the new tester to understand and know where the requirements have come from.

Requirements traceability matrix is a table that shows the many to many relationship between requirements and test cases. Each requirement is mapped to one or more test cases.
